Tony came back to the hospital as soon as the visiting hours allowed. We
spent the next few hours just gazing at our beautiful daughter. The doctor
came round and checked Hannah out and she gave her the all clear. We also
got shown how to bath Hannah. I was still having a few problems breastfeeding
but wasn't worried at this stage.
In the afternoon my Mum and Dad and my friend Amie came to visit. It was great to see them and show off Hannah, who of course slept though the whole event!
At 4p.m. I asked whether I could go home and was given the all clear.
I don't know why but leaving the hospital with Hannah and Tony felt terrifying.
Just 36 hours earlier I had arrived with my massive bump and now we had
a little baby to look after, it all felt surreal. The car journey home
was scary. I was so conscious of all the dangers of the road, but we made
it home safely and started our new lives as a little family.
The first few days were definitely a bit of a blur and yes very hard. I
still hadn't got the hang of breastfeeding and Hannah was starting to get
quite weak and was going yellow! When the midwife came round she sprang
into action and got me to express and give Hannah her milk via a syringe.
It was very stressful at the time and I felt like I was failing because
I wasn't able to breastfeed properly. The midwives were great though and
the next day watched me try to feed, gave me a few adjustments and hey
presto we started to get the hang of it. I was so relieved.
What a cutie!
